Karen O’Neal, head of Civic Engagement at Erie VA, introduced us to Al, a 108-year-old Army veteran residing at the VA hospital in Erie, PA. As the 12th oldest person in the United States and a World War II veteran, Al spoke eloquently about his life and service. He shared his pride in serving our country. He was at D-Day in Normandy and asked about the flags flying across the nation and the friendliness of people. His humility and positivity were truly inspiring.

Al’s words reinforced my determination to raise funds for veterans and complete this journey at Paul Revere Beach in Massachusetts. The Erie VA hospital, like many others, is filled with veterans needing physical and mental support. Meeting Al and other veterans, including those exercising and resting in their rooms, was a heartwarming experience.

Later in the evening, after dinner at an oyster restaurant, we went to Sara’s for ice cream with Carol, Tanny, Maggie, and myself. My daughter Ashley and Tanny’s daughter Tally, who have been best friends since fourth grade, joined us in Erie on our day off. Sharing these moments with friends and family made the day even more special.
