Day 25: Rolling Hills, New Friends, and Sweet Treats – Emporia to Topeka
Today’s ride from Emporia to Topeka, Kansas, covered 59 miles and marked two significant milestones: our last day in Kansas and the halfway point of our entire trip. It’s hard to believe we’ve come this far, and the journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Cycling along the back roads, we were treated to the picturesque scenery of rolling hills that seemed to stretch endlessly. Fields of buffaloes dotted the landscape, a majestic sight that added to the sense of connection to America’s heartland. American flags waved proudly in the breeze, symbolizing the unity and patriotism that resonate throughout this region. Passing numerous silos, I was reminded of the agricultural backbone that sustains so many communities here. The simplicity and beauty of the rural landscape provided a peaceful backdrop for reflection on the journey so far.

Along the way, we stopped at Sommerset Cafe, where the owner bakes fresh pies daily. I couldn’t resist a slice of peach pie a la mode – it was to die for! This delightful stop added a sweet touch to an already memorable day.

I’ve met some wonderful friends and seen an incredible country, each state offering its own unique and special vista. From the rolling hills to the friendly faces, every day brings new experiences and deepens my appreciation for this journey.
Upon arriving at our hotel, I had the opportunity to participate in an interview with Jake Meyer for the Topeka Department of Veteran Affairs Facebook page. It was an honor to share my story and the mission behind this ride, which aims to raise funds and awareness for veterans.

Reaching the halfway point is a momentous occasion, filled with both a sense of achievement and anticipation for the miles still to come. Each day brings new challenges and rewards, and today was a perfect example of the serene yet powerful experiences that cycling across America offers.

As we prepare to leave Kansas behind, I carry with me the memories of the rolling hills, the majestic buffaloes, and the warm, welcoming people. Here’s to the second half of this incredible journey and all the adventures that await us on the road ahead.
